History:
Based in the historic Forestry Town of Sabie, in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga, the Sabie Classic is one of the most respected and longest running MTB races in South Africa and is renown for providing World Class competition that attracts both weekend warriors to seasoned International Professionals.
The inaugural race was held in February of 1998 and was the first race in South Africa to feature both long distance professional level marathon alongside a half marathon distance for the enthusiastic rider.
The first race attracted 250 riders and at its peak we enjoyed over 3500.
Community support and investment:
Since the inception of the race the Lowveld Chaingang, from the proceeds of the event has contributed over R1 million to local community charities and organisations from the Ubuntu orphanage to the Lions Club as well as community feeding programs. Every year we employ many local youth to assist with marshalling and course preparation provides longer term employment.
Tourism in Sabie:
The Sabie Classic Mountain Bike race is the single largest event in Sabie in terms of attracting tourism to the town. At its peak with 3500 riders over R10million is injected into the local hospitality industry at an otherwise slow time between the Christmas and Easter seasons.
Media coverage:
The Sabie Classic has extensive media coverage, from traditional print media to social media and where sponsorship has allowed, television coverage. Being one of the most prominent races on the National Calendar it always attracts interest from all spheres of cycling.
Sabie Classic – The Future:
The format of the race for 2018 will be a one day event with 4 distances to suit everyone from the hard core professionals to the complete novices. Distances will be 80km, 42km, 19km and 10km.
The inclusion of the York Trails in 2017 was an inspired move and certainly added a level of excitement that we would like to build on. This will give the opportunity to allow many ‘regular’ mountain bikers to experience the trails now made famous by the exclusive ‘York Enduro’.
In early 2018 there will be many International Professionals in South Africa for the World Cup in Stellenbosch as well as The Cape Epic and they would welcome the opportunity to use the event for their Cape Epic training.
